Schmied (Smead)
Editorial Note
The "Smead" family is referenced in other Highland histories but I have been unable to locate any of that name with a possible connection to Highland so I submit the following as the family referred to:
(Number 10 on the 1958 Highland map - 10480 N. 6660 W.)
Elsie Elizabeth & Esther Lydia Schmied
These two sisters show up as Sunday School teachers in 1927-28. Elsie was born March 11, 1909, and Esther April 14, 1910, to Ferdinand and Emma Freida Miller Schmied. They are in the American Fork High School yearbooks as juniors in 1927 and seniors in 1928, with a notation "Box Elder High" by their names. The 1930 census shows them living in Salt Lake City, Esther as a servant to the George M. Cannon family and Elsie living with her parents.
Ferdinand Schmied was born October 23, 1883, in Rehrmalt, Munsingen, Switzerland to Jacob and Elizabeth Peters Ruch Schmied. He came to America in either 1891 or 1897. Emma was born February 17, 1887, in Ohio to Andreas and Barbara Meister Miller. They were married August 31, 1908, in Box Elder, Utah. Elsie and Esther were the two oldest children, others were: Arthur, Lester Ferdinand, Harry, and Shirley Darlene. They lived at (Number 10 on the 1958 Highland map).
They were living in Salt Lake City in 1931 and 1934 and in Green River, Wyoming in 1940. Ferdinand died February 13, 1952, in Salt Lake City and Anna died July 17, 1964, in Box Elder. They are buried in the Riverview Cemetery in Tremonton, Utah.
Esther Schmied
Esther married William D. Rogers June 23, 1934, and apparently had no children. She died December 4, 2000, in Long Beach, California. Elsie apparently never married, although her headstone says: "Beloved Mother". No children, spouse or change of surname can be found. She died January 14, 1987, in Salt Lake City.Source: HIGHLAND HISTORY: A compilation by Charles T Greenland II for the Highland Historical Society
